Why Are Galls So Diverse in Form? Insights from Comparisons Across Plant Species

How are the diverse forms of living things generated? This is one of the most universal and beautiful questions in biology.

Galls induced by insects take strikingly varied and unusual shapes depending on the insect species, such as confetti-candy-like, sac-like, and hairy forms. Until now, the complex shapes of galls were thought to be determined by insect factors.

While observing a large number of galls, however, we noticed a pattern: galls on hard stems tend to be simple in shape, whereas galls on soft leaves tend to be complex. This led us to hypothesize that gall shape is determined not only by the insect but also by the physical constraints of the underlying plant tissue, such as its stiffness and cell wall properties.

We recently supported this hypothesis through an interdisciplinary approach that combined fractal-dimension (complexity) measurements using citizen science data with the evaluation of mechanical properties (Bessho-Uehara et al. 2025, Sci Rep.).

We are now extending this perspective to compare galls across a wide range of plant species. By examining differences in developmental constraints and morphological adaptation among host plants, we aim to reveal the full set of biological and physical rules by which galls, as “extended phenotypes,” have diversified over the course of evolution.
